I think you shouldn’t talk about this topic. It’s exactly the same as what was presented in the original game on PS1, SS, and PC. All the fun is hidden in the game. If someone doesn’t know, the Nintendo DS that this re-release comes from has two screens.
On the lower screen, we see the game, while on the upper screen, we have the health indicator (the screen lights up yellow when in reserve, and red when in danger) along with the amount of ammunition and weapons equipped. It’s handy and eliminates frequent visits to the inventory. In the meantime, it has only undergone some cosmetic changes.
Everything is done to please the player’s comfort. The lower screen is a touchscreen, and all menu items can be selected by tapping with a stylus or a cross mark. But this isn’t even the beauty of the game. In this re-release, there are two types of “completely familiar gum.” The first is the game we all played on consoles and PCs. The second is a rethinking of the original concept utilizing the Nintendo DS’s capabilities. If you’ve played the first part more than once – the new mode is definitely for you.
The subject hasn’t been touched upon yet, but here, new mini-games that fit into the game are added, along with the locations of objects (unfortunately not keys) and enemies. It turned out to be such an Advanced Manager Cut, but instead of key items, it mixed in the enemies.
Even the old puzzles have learned new tricks, for example: the clock in the hall must be manually set. Interesting, isn’t it? Such surprises are not small. The most unforgettable moment: performing mouth-to-mouth on Richard using the Nintendo DS microphone. And not just any way, with kindness; otherwise, Richard could die.
In addition to all this, the game has added random battles with enemies. During such moments, the game switches to first-person view, the character arms themselves with a knife, and by using the stylus on the screen, we slice through various creatures with this knife. This approach will keep you from getting bored, and your hands won’t go numb.
By the way, as mentioned above about the enemies – many have been “mixed up,” so those playing for the first time can expect many “pleasant” surprises.
And beneath the surface, there are three little “donuts”; the game added the ability to reload weapons without entering the inventory, a separate button for taking a knife, and a counterattack if you catch a zombie (something like this was in the Outbreak series). To be honest, this wasn’t enough. Don’t forget about curious players. Try poking Jill in the chest 😉
But that’s not all. The game introduced multiplayer. I can already predict complaints; they say, why is there multiplayer here, etc. No, the multiplayer mode here is a separate mode, and the campaign plot does not apply. What were the developers trying to surprise us with?
Multiplayer works via wireless communication between two Nintendo DS systems. Accordingly, to play with a friend, you need two laptops and two cartridges. There are two modes here: The first is Versus. By the rules, it resembles a mercenary from Resident Evil 3. Players’ task is to clear the level and score more points than others. Whoever has more – gets the slippers. The second mode is Cooperative. Here, the rules are: a team must pass certain levels to have HP. You can switch found items and weapons. There are also bonuses for being in the same room – players are given a bonus for damaging each other. At the end of each level, there’s a boss.
And a final word and a few words instead of various evaluations. I think – this is the complete and best version of the first part of the game. It turns out there is a fun multiplayer and a new game mode that will please both veterans and newcomers – we got two games together for the same price. The game is worth your money because if you want to experience nostalgia and blindly replay through the holes, play this re-release instead of Resident Evil 1.
