Once upon a time, there was a game designed as the precursor to Virtua Fighter 3, heavily advertised from start to finish. Fighters Megamix uses a concept from King of Fighters: a combination of characters and styles from different games. It includes open rings typical of Virtua Fighter 2, as well as closed arena cells based on Fighting Vipers. The characters from VF have new moves taken from VF3. The most notable of these was the sideways movement on a slope, which served to both avoid a dangerous hit and provide an opportunity for a counterattack. Sega capitalized on this innovation in advertising, calling Fighters Megamix the first fighting game in “real 3D.” Unlike most AM2 games of the time, Fighters Megamix did not make it to arcades. In 1998, Tiger Electronics released a port for the Game.com system.

Along with standard Survival, Paired Game, and Team Battle modes, Fighters Megamix features an unusual single section that replaces the standard arcade mode; this section is divided into 9 sub-sections:
– Beginner’s Trial (for newcomers)
– Virtua Fighter (all characters from Virtua Fighter)
– Fighting Vipers (all characters from Fighting Vipers)
– Girls (all standard female characters)
– Muscle (strong characters)
– Smart Guys (tactical fighters)
– Dirty Fighters
– Bosses (the last secret characters given)
– Secrets (the remaining bonus characters not included in the “Bosses” section)

Each sub-section contains 6 fights against normal characters and a final battle with a hidden character. By completing the first 4 “standard” sections, you can move on to the following 3 sections, then go to the second to last section, and from there to the last one.

It is possible to switch between Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter, not only for the player but also for the computer. This allows you to fight in a different style. The default style is Fighting Vipers.
