A.B. Cop is a futuristic-themed racing game by Sega, where the player assumes the role of a law enforcement officer who must chase and take down the perpetrators of an armed robbery while riding a heavily armored and heavily armed highlighted bike. The time limit is crucial.
At the beginning of each level, the player’s bike is equipped with a limited number of ‘Jumping’ capabilities that allow the bike to temporarily gain air when used; this is useful for avoiding many vehicles that can pollute both enemy and benign tracks. Also, if timed well, it’s possible to jump from above and attack enemy targets. Additional jumps can be obtained by passing over the blue ‘Jump’ symbols that occasionally appear on the track.
In addition to jumps, pushing the joystick upward gives the motorcycle a brief speed boost, which is necessary to complete levels within the game’s strict time limits. Unlike jumps, the bike has an unlimited number of speed boosts.
At the end of each stage, a large heavily armed guardian appears, which takes multiple hits to destroy—a first for the racing genre.
A.B. Cop greatly resembles Taito’s superb racing classic “Chase HQ,” which was released two years ago.
