Developed by Tose for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the football video game was published by Jaleco in 1992. Goal! Two and the NES version of Goal! (1992) were retitled by Jaleco as Super Goal! for European markets. Goal! was the first football title for Tose on the Super Famicom. Jaleco also released Goal! and Super Goal! for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in December 1992, shortly after Goal! Two for the NES.
For the NES version’s release in France, Jaleco secured a licensing agreement with French international football player Eric Cantona, who had recently transferred to Manchester United FC. The French packaging featured the title prefix “Cantona” and bore his name and likeness, resulting in the game being titled: Eric Cantona Football Challenge! 2. The SNES title was Eric Cantona Football Challenge, but it was one of the localization differences between Forvet (Rage Software 1992).
Goal! Two is the first sequel by Tose to Goal! (1989). Since Goal! is a localization of Moero 5! Pro Soccer (1988), it is considered the fifth installment of the long-running Moero! sports game series. Goal! is a spin-off of the Moero! video game series.
Jaleco followed with [Super] Goal! and Super Goal! 2 (1994), a localization of Takeda Nobuhiro’s Super Cup (1993). The additional Super Famicom installment, Takeda Nobuhiro’s Super League Soccer (1994), was not released outside of Japan.
