In Street Smart 2, you start by choosing one of the fighters (a blonde man or a dark-haired man in karate attire). You are then thrown into one of the many cities on the map to fight. The opponents are tough but simple. This game does not have a special move (it only has punch, kick, and jump buttons), and all the characters have ridiculously high energy. So you pretty much wait for someone to fall while they punch and kick each other. An ambulance will appear to take away the defeated opponent, and a girl from the audience will come out to congratulate you.
Street Smart was released in August 1989.
Street Smart was SNK’s response to Capcom’s original “Street Fighter” game.
This game could have been a hit (there were almost no fighting games on the market at the time), but they made a fatal mistake. This mistake was making the game cooperative in 2-player mode. Instead of fighting each other, a second enemy would appear, and the players would work together against both. This completely eliminated all the fun and excitement of playing this game in 2-player mode. “Street Fighter II – The World Warrior” was released about a year later, and most of the Street Smart games quickly transitioned to these.
Some players think that Player 1’s character resembles a young Takuma Sakazaki seen in the “Art of Fighting” and “King of Fighters” series. Until now, SNK has not officially confirmed whether this is the case.
The old man in the background bears a strong resemblance to Master Roshi from Dragon Ball.
The music from the first stage of Street Smart was later reused in a 2-player battle in “Fatal Fury – King of Fighters.”
