The Fighting Champion follows the same rules of fighting games established by Street Fighter II: the player’s character fights against an opponent in a single-player tournament mode, winning two out of three matches against either the computer or another human player. The player has a character list consisting of ten fighters, each with their own unique fighting style and special techniques.
The control scheme is different from Street Fighter II and other typical fighting games inspired by it. The control system of Fighting Champion is derived from the control system of Yie Ar Kung-Fu, but it has been simplified to high, medium, and low attacks instead of using an attack button and a directional input. A unique feature of this arcade game is its stages, which resemble the “high jump” stages seen in later fighting games like Capcom’s X-Men: Children of the Atom. Another unique feature is that certain characters carry weapons that can be disarmed by opponents and used against them.
