After Burner is another 3D Sega game featuring superior sprite scaling technology; this time, it puts the player in the cockpit of a powerful jet fighter.
Players can expect a series of colorful, fast-moving environments as they encounter waves of enemy aircraft aiming for their destruction.
At the end of every second stage, the player’s jet fighter is refueled and rearmed either through the emergence of a large support plane or by landing on a military airstrip.
Following the simple shoot ’em up gameplay of Burner, the game is spectacular and repetitive but enjoyable—largely thanks to the game’s incredible visuals. After Burner was released in Japan on July 17, 1987.
The After Burner series is inspired by the 1986 Academy Award-winning feature film “Top Gun.”
